More Remodeling

I made myself a goal at the end of January to have the guest bedroom and the nursery painted before March. I didn’t think I was going to achieve that goal, but somehow I managed it. I spent my birthday at home painting the nursery. It sounds lame but that was really how I wanted to spend my time. Between yesterday and today I accomplished so much with the help of my husband and it actually looks like we have a nursery. It is nowhere near finished and we are nowhere close to being prepared for the baby, but we have a good start now.

Of course after painting all of the bedrooms and the bathroom upstairs, it makes me really want to paint the hallway…

Saving the World from Intruders

This week we have had some pretty hard calls to deal with at work. On Valentine’s Day we had a homicide, which was made worse because the person who called in to report it was the murderer. On Friday, we had a suicide to add into the mix of the usual calls. On Sunday we spent the entire day looking for the suspect in a pedestrian hit and run that left one of the pedestrians in serious condition. (We found the suspect 45 minutes before the end of shift). Having two deaths during the week and a manhunt for a suspect is pretty unusual. Yesterday I had a call, though, that made me feel good about what I do.

The call did not start out well. A boy of about 11 called me to say he was home alone and there was an intruder in the house. I immediately dispatched police to his location and told the boy to stay on the phone with me and not hang up. While the police were en route, I asked the boy questions about why he thought there was an intruder, was he home alone, where was he, where did he think the intruder was, anything that would give me more information and keep him talking. I have to admit that it was scary for me as well, because there’s nothing I can do for him except stay on the line. At one point the boy thought the intruder was upstairs coming towards his location. I told him to stay hidden and keep talking to me. Long story short, the boy was at his grandparent’s house visiting and was left alone. He had been upstairs with the TV on and had just gotten out of the shower when he heard someone in the house. When my officers arrived we discovered that the grandfather’s car was in the driveway and the grandfather had come home unexpectedly. I was able to relay this information to the boy, who was still too terrified to come out of the hiding spot that he had found. I told the boy that he could stay on the phone with me until his grandfather came upstairs to get him. By this time, the boy was still terrified, but also a little mortified because he called 911 for a false alarm. I reassured him that it was okay to be scared and he did the right thing by calling 911. I would have been just as scared had I come out of the shower in an unfamiliar house and heard someone inside when I was supposed to be alone. I know that this boy will probably get teased by his family for awhile, but at least he knows that 911 works.

Trying not to let the hormones get out of control

If another person asks me if I'm due in April I might scream! I'm not seven months pregnant, I'm only five. This baby still has four more months to incubate.

And if someone finds my ankles let me know. I seem to be missing them, the ankles I have now aren't mine. I suppose they might reappear again in another four months.

It's a Boy!

My long-awaited sonogram appointment was this morning. It was pretty nice. Ryan and I went to breakfast together before the appointment, which is something we rarely have the opportunity to do. It made the morning more enjoyable than it would have been since I had to drop him off at school afterwards.

The baby is doing really well. All of his organs and limbs are forming correctly and he looks like he should. We found out that we are having a boy. Ryan and I are both thrilled. The sonotech said that he weighs about 15 oz already (about 5 oz more than the average baby at his stage). She moved my due date up four days to June 15th, which happens to be my parent’s wedding anniversary. She also thouroughly checked my uterus and said that there is indeed only one baby inside.

It was an amazing experience and so neat to be able to see the baby moving. I really can’t wait to meet this little one.

Lost Head

I have worked as a 911 dispatcher since mid-September. While my job can be extremely stressful, I really enjoy being able to help people out. That being said I am never sure what the day might bring when I wake up each morning and prepare to go to work.

Today was a typical day. There was a burglary from a burnt-down residence, a depressed woman who had cut herself to escape from the pain, and a vehicle rollover with an ejection. Intermingled in all of these were the usual car accidents, vandalized property, lost wallets and reckless drivers.

My craziest call of the day… Willie the Wildcat called me looking for his head. Willie the Wildcat is the Kansas State mascot (http://consider.k-state.edu/traditions/willie.htm). There are several Willie the Wildcats that appear at different events. The last event that Willie attended was the K-State vs KU men’s basketball game. After K-State miraculously won the game, Willie the Wildcat made his way down to Aggieville, the local bar district, and spent the night partying until his head was confiscated. Willie the Wildcat is not supposed to be in Aggieville to party, he’s only allowed in Aggieville for school approved events. Now I am not quite sure if K-State officials confiscated the head or whether it was confiscated by the police, or even K-State students. I knew from briefing the other day that the head was confiscated, but I never heard by who. Honestly it was quite amusing to talk with Willie the Wildcat who is looking for his head for an appearance tomorrow night. I honestly felt bad for the guy since he wasn’t even the one who lost the head, but I think it’s kind of funny that he’s trying to track down a head for tomorrow night. Sadly I couldn’t even help him since it was a Sunday and our lost property department is closed. I wish him the best in his search, though.

It does leave me wondering what tomorrow will bring…
