What we found out today:

-he's definitely a boy
-he has a head full of hair
-he weighs approx 5lbs 3 oz
-he appears to be healthy and doing well
-the cord isn't wrapped around his neck because he keeps his feet in front of his face
-he's breech (but still has time to flip)
-he has chubby little cheeks
-and when I lay on my back for a length of time I get sick

Sorry, I've been busy

Sorry that I haven’t posted anything new in a long time. The end of April really was busy. I have a mountain of e-mails that I need to respond to and I never seem to have enough energy after work anymore to sit down and deal with e-mails or my blog.

-We had a visit from my mother-in-law. It was nice to see her. She brought with her my birthday present from last year, a Texas-shaped birdbath, which has turned into one expensive dog and cat water bowl. I haven’t seen any birds bathing in it yet. The cat drinking out of it is pretty funny, though. I’ll have to try and take a picture of that sometime.

-I had a visit from a friend from high school with her 1 year old son. They wore me out! We did have some nice days, though, while they were here. We were able to go to the zoo, the city park and spend some time outside playing. It was nice to enjoy the outdoors for the first time this spring. I also got a glimpse of what my future will be like with this baby. Good things to know- my dog is pretty gentle with little children, the cat does not like having his tail pulled and the dog will eat any food that has been thrown on the floor.

-The best part was seeing my mom and aunt again. It has really been too long since I last saw them and I will do my best to prevent that from happening again, especially when there will be a little boy who needs to be a part of their life. I was sad to see them go, but I know it won’t be too much longer before I see either one of them again.

Mailbox

Today was a pretty nice day. I was able to hang out with my friend, Laura, who came over for lunch and helped me wash and put away baby clothes. I didn’t really accomplish anything that I wanted to, but that was fine with me. I thought that this evening would be pretty relaxing. I had dinner with my husband while we watched Troy. After we finished eating he asked if I wanted to walk to the mailbox with him. I didn’t really feel like it but I’m supposed to walk for five minutes after I eat to help burn up the extra glucose. The driveway is a ¼ mile long, so it’s a decent walk for five minutes. The walk was pretty uneventful until we got to the mailbox. There was no mailbox. We both stood there in shock for a moment. Our mailbox sits on a pile of stones with a fence around them to contain them. The mailbox was lying in the grass still attached to the fence, the mail was spread out on the ground, and the stones were everywhere. There were also pieces of bumper and headlight all over the ground. What was truly shocking was that the mailbox was built around an old piece of farm machinery that was bolted into a concrete pad. The farm machinery was several feet away lying by the telephone pole. I would really love to figure out who hit our mailbox. It took us an hour and a half to put it back together. Thankfully we had a piece of fence and some wire up in our shed to work with. My only source of joy in this whole situation is that whoever did this left us part of their fender, which we will be holding hostage.

Randomness

-I had another dietician appointment today. They still love that I eat so healthy, but they’re still concerned about my glucose levels. The levels are on the edge. They put in a call to my doctor to see if he would like me to take insulin. I haven’t heard anything back yet, but he was delivering twins this morning, so I imagine he’s pretty busy.

-I tried to take a nap today, but the baby had other ideas. He thought my nap time was a fabulous time to try out some new dance moves. It’s rather difficult to sleep when a baby is dancing in your belly. I guess I should be thankful that he doesn’t try out dance moves every night at bed time.

-For the most part I think I have Spring cleaned my house. I still have a couple of things more to do, but I feel that the house is the cleanest it has been in years. I accomplished this just in time for all of the company that is supposed to arrive this month.

-I started making homemade laundry detergent awhile ago. I received the recipe from a girlfriend and thought it was fairly easy to make. I love that it has no extra dyes, scents or any other additives that companies feel like throwing in. It is gentle enough to use for baby laundry, which was a huge reason for me to give it a try, but it is strong enough to clean all sorts of soiled clothes. Today I went to the Laundromat because I had a huge amount of comforters and blankets that I needed to wash. Instead of bringing along my homemade detergent I grabbed the box of Tide that has been sitting on our shelf for who knows how long. I must say that I love the homemade detergent so much more than store bought detergent, especially after I was blasted by the overpowering scent of Mountain Fresh Tide.

-I have slowly been childproofing our house. No, I am not being an overprotective parent who wants the house childproofed the moment the baby comes home from the hospital. I have a friend arriving in two weeks to spend three days with us and she is bringing along her 1 year old son. I have been getting the house ready for him. I have been putting on cabinet latches at the rate of about 1 per day. This has irritated my husband when he tries to open a cabinet and finds an obstacle. Won’t he be mad tonight when he finds out I got ambitious and finished the rest of the cabinets!!

-Speaking of my husband, I’ll be glad after this Saturday. He is taking an 8 hour engineering exam on Saturday and has spent the last three weeks going to review classes to prepare for it in addition to maintaining his regular classes. I haven’t really seen him too much. It will be nice to have him home for dinner again and to get more than 20 minutes of his time right before he crashes into bed.

The Week is off to a Great Start

Here are a couple of humorous stories that happened to me this week…

The other night my husband and I went out to dinner at a Tex-Mex restaurant. I took my time with the menu since my carbs are limited. I decided I wanted the tamale dinner. It came with three tamales topped with chili. Apparently when I ordered I said enchiladas instead of tamales. I had no clue that I did this and my husband never said anything. Out came my plate with two enchiladas covered with chili. I ate them, but made some comment on how they were the worst tamales I’ve ever eaten. My husband gave me a weird look, but didn’t say anything. Later when we were walking through the grocery store somehow dinner got brought up and that’s when he informed me that I had ordered enchiladas and I revealed that I had no clue and honestly thought I had ordered tamales. I guess I can chalk this up to pregnancy brain.

This morning I decided to do some spring cleaning upstairs in our family room. I had the sliding door open because it is a nice day and the cats were running in and out playing with each other. My brother called, so I stopped to talk with him. While I was on the phone with him, Gobbles ran into the house with something in his mouth. I told my brother to hold on. I set the phone down and went over to Gobbles. That’s when he dropped a live baby snake onto the carpet next to the sofa upstairs. I let out a blood-curdling scream, grabbed the phone and told my brother I would call him back. Then I ran downstairs, grabbed the longest pair of tongs we have and ran back upstairs to retrieve the snake and hurl it over the railing into the yard. My heart was racing, the baby was probably terrified, and I had to call my brother back to explain what had happened. Lesson learned, if Gobbles is outside, DON’T leave any doors open for him!!

It’s only Wednesday. I wonder how the rest of the week will go!

Hooray! The Ice Cream is Back.

It’s been a long week. I’ve spent the past seven days monitoring what I eat, worrying about needles and having to use little vials of insulin, trying to make sure I walk five minutes after every meal, stressing about the amount and type of food that I pack to take to work, over-pricking myself and trying to figure out the best way to get the right amount of blood for my glucose test, wistfully watching other people eat dessert and foods with sugar, giving up Blue Bell ice cream for terrible sugar-free ice cream bars, and lying in bed in the morning thinking I’ve really got to go to the bathroom but not wanting to go because then I’ll have to test my ketone levels and my glucose levels. I’ve had days where I’m completely fine and days where I’m depressed and frustrated because I’m eating healthy and my glucose levels are still high.

Today I met with the nutritionist again. She looked at my week’s worth of meals, exercise and glucose levels. I was waiting for her to tell me about what I was doing wrong and hear what I needed to change. It never happened. She actually said I was one of the healthier eaters she has ever seen come through the door. She didn’t know of anyone else who would eat half a cucumber for a snack. It was so helpful to talk with her and to learn more about what is considered a carb and how many I should be eating a day. She gave me a lengthier list of foods and taught me how to read nutrition labels. She also told me that I’m allowed to eat whatever ice cream I want I just need to realize that ½ cup equals 1 carb. I also learned that insulin is given in much simpler ways now than needles and vials, which is reassuring should I need to start taking it. I walked away from my appointment today feeling a little freer, a little more educated, and a little more optimistic about the next two and a half months.
